“PEOPLE NOT SLAVES: Stop Human Trafficking“
The project stems from the will of the Catholic Church in Ethiopia and VIDES to respond to the appeal launched by the Ethiopian government – through the National Commission for the Fight against Human Trafficking of which the Catholic Church is a member – to strengthen the initiatives on the national territory aimed at reducing the number of people involved in human trafficking.
Country: Ethiopia
Funding Authorities: CEI _Conferenza Episcopale Italiana_ 8×1000 della Chiesa Cattolica
Field: Prevention and awareness
Partner: Ispettoria AET – Salesiani di Don Bosco
Expected results for the period 2015-2016
- To strengthen the system of promotion of rights and prevention of the involvement of the population at risk of migration at national and regional level, through networking between public and private actors involved in the fight against human trafficking.
- To raise in the local population, especially those at the highest risk of emigration, their knowledge and understanding about the dynamics of human trafficking and the exploitation of illegal migration.
- To improve the knowledge of local contexts and the needs of the population for an effective planning and development of development programs aimed at affecting some of the main causes that are at the origin of the migration phenomenon (widespread poverty, lack of job and training opportunities, lack of health services, etc.)
Beneficiaries
It is expected to reach at least 5 million people. This number is purely indicative, resulting from an initial estimate made in the 4 dioceses involved in the project. The realization of an awareness-raising campaign that will reach the entire national territory through different channels portends a considerable increase in the number of beneficiaries.
Indirectly, the entire nation will benefit from the intervention, which can find concrete initiatives in the program to prevent the involvement of the population in the human trafficking, but also in the socio-economic development of the country. The needs assessments that will be implemented during the project in many areas of the country, will lead to the development and implementation of new development programs aimed at improving the living conditions of local communities, reducing the poverty rate between the population and the risk of illegal migration to other countries.
